The Prime Minister has decided to abandon plans that would have compelled landlords to invest up to £10,000 per property in energy efficiency enhancements.

This move comes after a consultation on these proposals, aimed at establishing a Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard rating of C for rented properties, concluded in 2021. Since then, landlords have been in a state of uncertainty, unsure of what changes would be mandated and when.

In a statement posted on gov.uk, the Government explained its decision to discontinue policies enforcing landlords to upgrade property energy efficiency, while still encouraging households to make such improvements voluntarily.

It’s worth noting that landlords won’t be required to invest significant sums during a cost-of-living crisis when many are themselves struggling financially. Ministers must now work on developing a comprehensive plan to support the rental market in making the energy efficiency improvements desired by all. This should encompass appropriate financial support and reform of the tax system to encourage investment in energy efficiency measures.
